Piazza Hortis
Piazza Hortis, created in 1788 from the demolition of a part of the thirteenth-century convent of the Friars Minor annexed to the church of Sant'Antonio Vecchio (today Beata Vergine del Soccorso). It was an ancient cemetery site in the early Christian era,and is located in the historic center of Trieste on the edge of the Cittavecchia building in the Borgo Giuseppino. Named Piazza Lutzen by the French to celebrate Napoleon's victory, designated as Piazza Leipzig by the Habsburgs to celebrate the defeat of the French, it then became Piazza Attilio Hortis as a tribute to one of the most illustrious directors in charge of the Civic Library which directly overlooks the square. Covered almost entirely by an enormous garden of approximately 2100 square meters where you can admire exotic trees. In its center there is a work by Giovanni Mayer, the statue of Jacopo Hortis, and in front of the Library there is the statue of the writer Italo Svevo, a 2004 work by the Trieste sculptor Nino Spagnoli, the symbol of the square's literary culture.
