The Garden of the Winckelmann Museum of Antiquities
Created in the nineteenth century to house the city's historical finds and later enriched with private donations, the Civic Museum of History and Art today houses an important Egyptian collection, archaeological materials from the Roman period, rooms dedicated to local Prehistory and Protohistory, Greek, Corinthian, Attic, Apulian and Etruscan vases, and showcases dedicated to Antiquity writings. There is also the unique storage-exhibition of the Tarentine Collection and the Cypriot Collection, which allows us to "peek" among the thousands of finds not yet placed in their own exhibition space. A nucleus of Mayan ceramics from El Salvador offers the opportunity to view the pre-Columbian civilizations of Central America. The Museum overlooks the Lapidary Garden, which houses epigraphs, monuments and sculptures from the Roman era, as well as the neoclassical temple dedicated to Johann Joachim Winckelmann, father of modern archaeology, murdered in Trieste on 8 June 1768.

The history of the Museum of Antiquities (which for a hundred years bore the name of the Civic Museum of History and Art) begins from the original location of the Lapidary Garden, which "grew up" around the Winckelmann monument. A garden of memories which was soon accompanied by purchases and gifts of artefacts and collections, to create a museum that never ceases to amaze.

The Greek and Magna Graecia vases are beautifully displayed in the museum windows, but they have a double life behind them: the ancient one when they were made and used; and the antiquarian one linked to their discovery, trade and composition of collections. In particular we will travel through the history of that prestigious collection put together in Trieste by Carlo d'Ottavio Fontana, which was partly transferred to our museums and the rest was dispersed abroad. At 9.30pm there will be ""C is for Caligo... El cotoler!"" Songs and instrumental interludes from the Schmidl Collections 3.
